What is a DPF?
Most diesel vehicles on the market today are fitted with a diesel particulate filter, or DPF, as a measure for reducing air pollution. Placed in the exhaust, the filter traps sooty particles and prevents them from entering the atmosphere via exhaust gas. It is usually in effect when the car is being driven with hard acceleration.
What is DPF regeneration?
In a DPF, filter cleaning usually occurs automatically through an inbuilt mechanism for burning off the accumulated matter. At times, however, certain driving conditions can cause the DPF to fail in completing this process, which can lead to a blockage in the vehicle’s exhaust system. DPF regeneration, or cleaning using external mechanisms, must then be carried out in order to avoid a costly DPF replacement.
